Erik ten Hag drops big hint about his Ajax future

Ralf Rangnick is at the wheel for now – until the end of the season at least.

The German signed his contract as interim manager and it would be premature to rule him out for the full-time position.

It’s a short-term arrangement with Rangnick supposedly moving into a consultancy role at the end of the season. The prospect of having his influence at board level is exciting and there will be a number of managers interested in taking over after the next six months pass.

Erik ten Hag, Mauricio Pochettino and Roberto Mancini are the names popping up in the newspapers, while I blindly ignore any claims that Brendan Rodgers is next in line for the crown.

There is no denying that Ten Hag has worked wonders at Ajax by making them a force in Europe again, but in a recent interview he issued an update on his future.

The Dutchman was asked about joining a bigger club and he told Volkskrant: “I think I’m ready for it. I would be happy to take up that challenge.”

“But I’m not chasing it. If it turns out that that step will never come, I will not say that my coaching career has failed. But I think I have sufficient competences to take on that challenge.”

Is this the man to bring Premier League titles back to Old Trafford? He doesn’t sound like someone who wants to spend many more years at Ajax.

People will probably change their opinions between now and May – with eyes also on Paris-Saint Germain to see whether Pochettino can deliver the Champions League.
