Ajax are now six points clear along with Borussia Dortmund atop Group C as they delivered a 2-0 victory over Beşiktaş on Tuesday.
Though Steven Berghuis and Sébastien Haller scored two nice first-half goals, Dušan Tadić came up with one of the more memorable misses of the season that could have put the match away.
While Ajax manager Erik ten Hag was satisfied with the victory, he was critical in the way his team did not take care of business much earlier.
“We created a lot of chances and scored two great goals,” ten Hag said at his press conference.
“That could have been three or four before the break and then the game is already over.
“In the second half, we consolidated and we had two very good chances, but we also got away with one (referring to Besiktas’ disallowed goal).
“Those are moments where the match can turn. We have to be alert to that and this team has to grow.
“I have been asked a few times if there is still room for improvement. And now we see: yes, there is still a lot of room for improvement.
“Certainly, at the highest level, we will have to take a few more steps forward if we want to make our wish to survive in the Champions League a reality.”
Ajax will now look to continue their unbeaten Eredivisie start as they take on fifth-placed Utrecht on Sunday.
