Fernandes returned from injury against Newcastle United yesterday. He showed his class with a 84th minute assist for Rasmus Hojlund who made it 3-1 in United’s favour.

It proved crucial as Lewis Hall reduced the deficit for the Magpies in stoppage time.

Speaking after the 3-2 victory, Ten Hag said that the club wants to keep Fernandes next season.

He told Manutd.com: “No, absolutely, the club wants to keep Bruno. There is no question.

“He loves Manchester United, he loves the fans from Manchester United, and he loves to play for Manchester United.”

“You see, he gives always his best. And he’s an example, even with injuries – he’s playing. He loves football. He wants to win, and I think that’s how I describe his character.”

In a separate interview with Sky Sports, Fernandes also clarified that he will be at United until they consider him to be dispensable.

He said (via BBC Sport): “I will be here till when the club wants me and the club wants me to be a part of the future. If for some reason they don’t want me, then I will go.”

Fernandes returned after a two-game absence against the Magpies. He managed 71 touches in the game with a passing accuracy of 82 percent, creating five key chances.

The 29-year-old was guilty of losing possession 19 times but made up for it with an assist, which contributed to United picking up a much-needed victory.

United are currently eighth in the table behind Newcastle, who have a superior goal difference.

A victory at Brighton & Hove Albion could secure Europa Conference League football for United, provided the Magpies drop points at Brentford.

The Red Devils also have the opportunity to qualify for the Europa League next term if they beat arch-rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
