Erik ten Hag calls Alan Shearer “stupid” for criticising Marcus Rashford | OneFootball

Erik ten Hag has called England legend Alan Shearer “stupid”.

Ten Hag was being interviewed by the media at the pre-match press conference for United’s home Premier League match against Liverpool on Sunday.

The manager was asked what he felt about Shearer’s comments on Rashford’s performance.

The England legend had criticised Rashford for a number of things, including being caught offside, in the match against Brighton.

Shearer referred to the offside incident as “staggering”.

When Gary Lineker attempted to defend Rashford, the former Blackburn Rovers star said “Yeah, but he’s not a youngster anymore, Gary. He has to understand the position and look across the pitch when you can see all of it. He shouldn’t be offside there.”

Ten Hag was obviously not pleased with the pundit’s comments.

“I was very happy with Rashy in pre-season, against Fulham and against Brighton;” he asserted.

“It is not why I took him off, that his performances weren’t right. We had to rotate.

“There will be rotation and there is the conclusion the player isn’t performing. It can be, but not in this. It was stupid analysis, in this case, from this pundit [Shearer].”

With Mason Mount ruled out injured and Rasmus Hojlund yet to recover from injury, Rashford is likely to start against Liverpool on Sunday. On this, Ten Hag commented:

“We are really looking forward to competing with them. We have a good squad, we can bring a good team out.

“We have to improve, we have new players to integrate. We are looking forward to this game.”
