With Ajax’s 4-2 victory over Sporting on Tuesday, the Amsterdam giants completed what few teams have done before: an 18-point Champions League group-stage haul.

Sébastien Haller needed only eight minutes to convert a penalty which gave him 10 group-stage goals, becoming just the fourth player to ever pull off the feat (Ronaldo, Messi, Lewandowski) and the fastest player to ever score 10 goals in Champions League history (six games).

Ajax and Liverpool became the eighth and ninth teams to earn 18 points from six group-stage games and Erik ten Hag couldn’t be happier with his side.

“To win one match in the Champions League is difficult enough but to win six in a row is an outstanding achievement,” Ten Hag said.

“The intensity was good throughout the match this evening. You saw that in the pressure we put on them which led to the second goal by Antony.”

Haller then reflected on both his and his team’s historic achievements.

“There is no secret [to our success]. It’s just a matter of working hard, together. The coach tells us everything we should know. And then we just try to stay focused,” Haller told UEFA.com.

“Of course I didn’t expect it [to score ten times in six matches], especially in my first games. The only thing you want to do is perform well, and be in the flow of the game.

“Ten goals was not in my dreams. So I can be happy and proud today.

“The way we train every day, the way we think; we always want to play well and perform. Even at the end of the game, you could see that.

“We’re really happy with the energy and focus we put into the game, and we just hope that the next game will be the same.”

The Champions League last 16 draw will take place on Monday 13 December, with the first legs to take place in mid-February.
