Ergas, Funes Mori lead Pumas UNAM over LD Alajuelense in Round of 16 first leg

MEXICO CITY — Pumas UNAM earned a 2-nil victory over LD Alajuelense in the first leg of their Round of 16 series as the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup continued on Tuesday at Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City, Mexico.
Robert Ergas opened the scoring in the 38’, knocking home a rebound as the Liga MX side took the lead. Ergas’ goal was just the second by a defender in Pumas’ last 31 goals in the Concacaf Champions Cup, dating back to August 2016.
Pumas doubled their lead in the 73’ as Adalberto Carrasquilla delivered a pinpoint free kick, and Rogelio Funes Mori headed it past the keeper. Funes Mori scored his sixth Concacaf Champions Cup goal, and his first with Pumas in the competition.
The three-time Champions Cup winners now have 11 wins, four draws, and four losses against Central American opposition since the 2008/09 campaign.
After defeating Cavalry (2-0) and Alajuelense (2-0), Pumas UNAM has kept two consecutive home clean sheets in the Concacaf Champions Cup for the first time since the 2011-12 edition.
The victory also marked the first for Pumas UNAM under newly appointed head coach Efraín Juárez.
The two sides will play the second leg next Thursday at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

Pumas has scored multiple goals in 16 of its 19 home matches against
teams from outside Mexico in the modern era of the Concacaf Champions
Cup (since 2008), scoring a total 65 goals in those matches (3.4 per match).
● After defeating both Cavalry (2-0) and Alajuelense (2-0), Pumas has kept
two consecutive home clean sheets in the Concacaf Champions Cup for the
first time since 2011-12 (4-0 v. Toronto FC, 1-0 v. Tauro and 8-0 v. Isidro
Metapán).
● Rogelio Funes Mori scored his sixth Concacaf Champions Cup goal, his
first with Pumas in the competition and his first since 2021, when he netted
the winner for Monterrey against América (1-0) in the final.
● Robert Ergas’ goal was just the second by a defender in Pumas’ last 31
goals in the Concacaf Champions Cup dating back to August 2016, along with
Arturo Ortíz, who scored against Saprissa in 2022.
● At 36 years, 281 days old, Celso Borges is the third Alajuelense player to
be involved in a Concacaf Champions Cup match at age 36 or older since
2021. The other two are Junior Díaz (37y 213d v. Atlanta United in 2021) and
Michael Barrantes (40y 154d v. New England Revolution in 2024).
