FC Twente missed out on European football this season after losing out to AZ Alkmaar in the play-off final. Joseph Oosting’s side finished third last season but could only finish sixth this year, 10 points adrift of FC Utrecht and European football. They will now see Sem Steijn leave the club as well, and he will have to replaced somehow. In Europe, the side were beaten by Norwegian champions FK Bodø/Glimt in the play-off round of the Europa League.
Player of the season for Twente and arguably player of the season for the entire league, Steijn took yet another step this season. In 48 games for the side he scored an incredible 31 goals and provided eight assists. He is on his way to Feyenoord next season, and Twente will have to work hard on finding a capable replacement.
The 23-year-old may be on the limits of ‘young player’ but certainly deserves accolades for his performances this season. The winger had another productive season, although not as strong as last year. In 47 games for the side he grabbed five goals and six assists.
As we’ve already said multiple times, a replacement for Steijn. The side were so reliant on him for goals and the question of replacing him will involve either finding another hidden gem, or goals by committee. 24 of their 58 goals this past season were scored by the Feyenoord bound midfielder.
