Brentford started in a 3-5-2 formation with a front two of Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney.

Brentford made a change to their defensive line late in the first half by bringing on Jorgensen to replace the goalscorer, Pinnock. They made two more changes in the second half.

Liverpool started in a 4-3-3 formation with their new front three of Salah, Jota and Mane.

Liverpool made only one change in the second half as they replaced Curtis Jones with Roberto Firmino.

Both teams had a high xG and had the same number of attempts on goal. Liverpool dominated possession of the ball as expected, but Brentford made most of the time when they had the ball.

Brentford had the higher xG but Liverpool managed to get more shots on target and forced a couple of saves from the Brentford keeper. Salah recorded an xG of 1.04 which was the highest of any player on the pitch.

Brentford had most of their attempts from inside the penalty box and also scored all three of their goals from these positions.

Liverpool attempted 12 shots on goal and had five of those shots on target. They had an xG of 0.19 per shot. Liverpool had most of their attempts from positions outside the penalty area.

The xT timeline indicates that both teams were able to create a number of chances and impose a threat on the opposition’s defence. Brentford had a higher xG than Liverpool from the first half.

David Raya attempted 39 passes but failed to complete 25 passes which indicates Liverpool players won most of the long balls that Raya attempted.

The Liverpool full-backs attempted the most number of passes for their team. They also received the balls from their teammates the most.

Brentford completed most of their passes on the left flank and also attempted more crosses from the same flank. Bryan Mbeumo attempted five crosses and put the ball into the six-yard box twice.

As mentioned earlier, the Liverpool full-backs received and made the most number of passes. Sadio Mane attempted five smart passes and made nine passes into the opposition 18-yard box.

Sergi Canos had the highest xT from the passes he attempted. As seen in the above visual, Brentford have a higher number of xT creation zones on the right flank where Sergi Canos was playing.

Kristoffer Ajer was able to impose a threat on the Liverpool defence with the dribbles he attempted and also made the right passes into the final third. Norgaard and Mbeumo also had a high xT with the dribbles they attempted but they failed to make the right pass.

As seen in the above visual, Liverpool created more chances from the right flank where the xT creation zones are more. Alexander-Arnold attempted 83 passes with an accuracy of 78.31% and had the highest xT of any other player on the pitch.

Most of the Liverpool midfielders had a high xT from their passes. Jordan Henderson had a high xT from his passes and provided the assist for Liverpool’s first goal. Sadio Mane had the highest xT from the dribbles he attempted.

Brentford failed to win half of the duels they attempted on the right flank while defending.

Ivan Toney won eight of the 17 aerial duels he attempted. Their centre backs won almost all aerial duels they attempted and only lost two.

Brentford only won nine loose ball duels throughout the match.

It was a similar scenario for the Liverpool players and they failed to win many defensive duels.

The centre back pairing of Van Dijk and Matip won 11 aerial duels and lost 10 duels.Liverpool always play with a high press and were able to win a majority of the 50-50 duels they attempted.

Liverpool have now moved to the top of the table with 14 points and will be looking to the result of Brighton’s game against Crystal Palace. But it was Brighton who impressed more in this thrilling match. The newly-promoted side now sit 9th in the Premier League.
