Burnley started in a 4-4-2 formation with Chris Wood and Vydra as their front two.

Burnley made an early change in the game as they replaced Vydra with Jay Rodriguez in the first half.

Norwich started the game with a defensive approach and had a formation of 5-3-2.

Norwich made all three of their changes in the dying moments of the game and maintained the same formation throughout.

Both teams had a decent number of attempts on each other’s goals, but it was Burnley who had a higher xG as they had more shots on target. Burnley had a PPDA of 7 which indicates they allowed their opposition to attempt only seven passes before attempting a defensive action. Norwich on the other hand had a PPDA of 17.8, which indicates they were comfortable with Burnley dominating possession of the ball.

Burnley attempted more attacking actions throughout the game and created the better chances to score a goal. Dwight McNeil had the highest xG on the pitch and also attempted the most number of dribbles.

Burnley attempted 13 shots on goal and had three of these shots on target. Burnley had a high number of shots from inside the box but failed to keep most of these shots on target.

Norwich City only had the two shots on target throughout the whole game and both their shots on target were taken from positions that were outside the penalty area.

Both teams had a low xG in the first half, but as the second half progressed, Burnley dominated the game and created more goalscoring opportunities. They had 10 of their 13 attempts in the second half. We can see the same story in the xT timeline, Burnley created a higher threat on the Norwich defence in the second half of the game.

Matthew Lowton attempted the most number of passes for Burnley but failed to complete 34 of these passes. Most of these were crosses that he attempted from the right flank, but were dealt with by the Norwich defenders.

Norwich failed to provide passes to their strikers for them to create chances. Teemu Pukki only received 13 passes from his teammates throughout the game.

Burnley used the flanks to move further up the pitch, as they completed more passes in these areas. They attempted a total of 34 crosses in the game, but were not able to find the breakthrough. Charlie Taylor attempted the most number of crosses for Burnley from the left flank.

As seen in the above visual, most of the Norwich defenders played high passes from the back into the final third. Their full-backs attempted the most number of crosses for them.

As seen in the pass zones for Burnley, they had a higher xT while attacking from the wider areas of the pitch. Josh Brownhill had the highest xT from the 54 passes that he attempted.

Dwight McNeil put up another impressive performance for Burnley as he had an overall high xT from the passes and the dribbles that he attempted in the game.

Norwich City were more effective while attacking from the left flank as seen in the xT creation zones. Giannoulis had the highest xT for Norwich with the crosses he attempted from the left flank.

The Norwich players failed to create any significant threat on the Burnley defence. Mathias Normann had the highest xT from the few dribbles that he attempted. Max Aarons failed to make the right pass when he was in threatening positions.Charlie Taylor only won one of the six defensive duels he attempted. Burnley won most of the duels they attempted on the right flank.

Burnley are known for their aerial prowess and always manage to win a high number of aerial duels.

Their defenders won 10 of the 13 loose ball duels they attempted and were able to recover the ball for their team.

Norwich attempted a higher number of defensive duels in their own half as they were on the back foot for most parts of the second half. They failed to win most of the defensive duels they attempted.

Grant Hanley was rock solid at the back for Norwich as he won seven of the 11 aerial duels he attempted.

Hanley also won the most number of loose ball duels at the back. He only lost one duel from the 10 that he attempted.

Burnley and Norwich are two of the four teams that have failed to win a single game in this season. Burnley had a higher chance of changing that stat in this game, but Norwich defended well to earn their first point of the 2021-22 season.
