Crystal Palace welcomed Newcastle United at Selhurst Park for Matchday 9 of the 2021-22 Premier League season. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, with Christian Benteke opening the scoring on 56 minutes for Palace, followed by a Callum Wilson equalizer for the visitors on 65 minutes. This was the Magpies’ first game after the new owners sacked Steve Bruce and announced Graeme Jones as the interim manager.

The average positions of The Eagles show that the game was a battle of the two midfield, as most of the players had their average positions near the halfway line. The back four had to stay inside their own half for most of the game. Newcastle United’s Starting XI (5-3-2): Karl Darlow, Matt Ritchie, Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth, Javier Manquilo, Ryan Fraser, Sean Longstaff, Isaac Hayden, Allan Saint-Maxim, Callum WilsonThe average positions of the Magpies show that they were clustered close together towards the centre. They crowded the midfield, not giving space to the opposition. All the players had average positions near and around the centre circle.

Patrick Viera’s men dominated the game with 73% of the possession. They took a total of 16 shots in the game, hitting the target four times. They were unlucky not to score more goals and get a win and had an xG of 1.75. Newcastle United took just six shots in the game, hitting the target twice only, but were also able to score a goal. They had an xG of 1.15.

Christian Benteke had the highest individual xG of 1.10 and the most shots(seven) in the game. Callum Wilson had the highest xG for Newcastle. Palace’s Marc Guehi had the most passes in the final third with 19 passes.

The Eagles’ shot map shows that they took a lot of shots in the match, and most of them were taken from inside the penalty area. They hit the target only four times from 19 shots, showing that they were not clinical enough in front of the goal. The visitors only managed to take six shots in the game, out of which four came from inside the box, and the other two from a very long distance. They had very few opportunities and were lucky to come away with a point.

The xT creation timeline of the match shows that the Eagles dominated and created almost all the chances in the first half. In the second half, both teams created a few opportunities each and got one goal each as well. The xG timeline shows the increase in xG for both teams over the course of 90 minutes.

Crystal Palace had a large number of passes to show for their 73% possession in the match. Joachim Anderson(103), Joel Ward(103)and Marc Guehi(102) all attempted more than 100 passes in the match, while also receiving the most(86,87,86).

The Magpies did not have a lot of passes in the match, with Matt Ritchie(32) and Emil Krafth(31) attempting the most passes for them. It was a poor performance in terms of passing from the visitors.

Crystal Palace’s passing zones show that they completed most of their passes in the midfield area, with a good number of passes on the two wings in the final third. Tyrick Mitchell put in four crosses and six passes into the opposition box. Newcastle United’s passing zones reiterate the fact that it was a poor passing display from them in the match. Matt Ritchie put in three crosses and three passes into the box.

The Eagles’ xT creation zones of the match show that they had a lot of opportunity creation in and around the opposition box. Joel Ward had the highest xT from passing. Other than Joel Ward, a lot of other Palace players like Olise, McArthur, Mitchell, Guehi, Milivojevic etc all had decent xT creation from passing, as the overall passing display from Viera’s men was very impressive. Benteke had the highest xT creation from dribbling.

Newcastle’s xT creation zones show that they had very limited opportunities and low xT creation in the match. The players did not have high xT creation. Goalkeeper Darlow and midfielder Isaac Hayden had the highest xT from passing, followed by Ritchie and Joelinton. Callum Wilson had the highest xT from passing, followed by substitute Miguel Almiron.

Crystal Palace contested a lot of defensive duels in their own half, especially on the left-wing in midfield and defence. Odsounne Edouard won four defensive duels, followed by Joel Ward, who won three.

There were a few aerial duels contested in the match, especially in both the penalty boxes. Benteke won five aerial duels in the match for the Eagles. Marc Guehi made six loose ball recoveries in the match, followed by James McArthur winning five and Conor Gallagher winning four. Most of the loose ball duels were in the midfield region of the pitch.

Newcastle United had to contest a very large number of defensive duels in their own half, especially in the defensive third. Emil Krafth won three duels, while a lot of other players won two or one each. Most of the aerial duels contested by the Magpies were in the opposition’s penalty box. Manquilo, Clark and Lascelles all won three aerial duels each.                  Ciaran Clark and Callum Wilson both won five loose balls for the team, as there were a decent number of loose ball duels all over the pitch. Isaac Hayden and Emil Krafth also made three loose ball recoveries each.

The draw at Selhurst Park keeps Newcastle United waiting for their first win of the season, as they are now one of the three teams still to win along with Norwich City and Burnley. The Magpies are currently second-last in the standings with just four points from nine games, while the Eagles are on 15th. They have only won one game, but have drawn six and lost just two games.
