Manchester United were battered 5-0 at Old Trafford against Liverpool in the Premier League. Naby Keita opened the scoring for Liverpool followed by Jota who added another. Mohammed Salah capped the remarkable win with a hat-trick.

Manchester United lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Cristiano Ronaldo led the attack with support from Rashford, Fernandes and Greenwood.
The average position indicates that Manchester United formed a narrow shape on the field. The fullbacks remained in their own half.
Liverpool lined up in their usual 4-3-3 formation. Firmino led the attacking line up flanked by Jota and Salah on either wing.
Liverpool occupied multiple spaces in the opponent half. Both the fullbacks pushed high up the field. Salah was the man highest up the field for his side.
Liverpool’s xG of 3.63 surpassed that of Manchester United’s, 1.58. Liverpool were highly threatening in the attack as indicated by their attacking metrics. They were effective in their pressing as indicated by their lower PPDA value. Liverpool also maintained higher possession at the final whistle.
Liverpool were highly accurate with their shots as indicated by their 47.06% shots on target. Salah had the highest xG in the match, 1.93 while he also took the highest number of shots, seven. Alexander-Arnold made 22 passes into the final third. Rashford made six dribbles.
Manchester United took a total of 12 shots with just three on target. They were less accurate with their shots than their opponents. They took most of their shots from inside the opposition box but were unable to find the target.
In contrast, Liverpool took a total of 17 shots with eight on target. They did not shy away from taking shots at the opponent’s goal. Most of their shots were taken from inside the box including all of their goals.
Liverpool dominated in terms of the xT timeline in both halves. They were highly threatening for the entirety of the game. The xG timeline further highlights Liverpool’s dominance in the game as they were on top of their opponents in both halves with Manchester United having little to show for.
Fred attempted 52 passes for his team while he and Maguire received 35 passes each.
Liverpool were impressive in their passing as indicated by their passing matrix. Alexander-Arnold and Henderson played the highest, 29 passes between each other. Henderson attempted 132 passes for his team while he also received 123 from his team.
Manchester United held on to the ball in their own half and in the half-spaces near the centre. They attempted crosses from both left and right-wing, achieving success only once.
Liverpool dominated the passing zones in the midfield. They made several successful smart passes in the opponent half while also making multiple successful crosses into the opposition box.
Manchester United created their highest xT inside the opposition box but failed to take advantage. McTominay created the highest xT from passes for his side, 0.308.
Marcus Rashford created the highest xT from his dribbles, 0.081.
Liverpool also created their highest xT from inside the opposition box and took full advantage. Alexander-Arnold created the highest xT from his passes, 0.971.
Curtis Jones created the highest xT from his dribbles, 0.04 followed by Salah, 0.031.
Manchester United were successful in winning defensive duels in their own half. Fred won two of his six defensive duels.
Manchester United won their highest number of aerial duels in the opponent box. Maguire won four of his six aerial duels.
Maguire also won four of his seven loose ball duels. Manchester United recovered most of their loose balls near the centre.
Liverpool won their highest number of defensive duels on the right-wing near the centre. Alexander-Arnold, Henderson and Keita all won three defensive duels each.
Jota, Firmino and Konate all won three aerial duels each. Liverpool were successful in winning aerial duels near the centre.
Liverpool recovered most of their loose balls in the opponent half and near the centre. Konate, Keita and Firmino all recovered three loose balls each.
With the defeat at home against Liverpool, pressure on Solskjaer is at an all-time high. Manchester United’s humbling defeat at home leaves them at seventh place in the Premier League.
