The average positions of the Wolverhampton players show that they were defending most of the time and had positions inside their own half. They waited for opportunities on the counter, and the substitutes came in and had an impact, as they scored three goals in the last ten minutes.

The Villans took a total of 15 shots in the match, hitting the target five times and scoring two goals. They had 52% possession in the match and had 23 positional attacks in the games. They had an xG of 0 95. On the other hand, Wolves took only eight shots in the game, hitting the target four times and scoring three goals and had an xG of 1.66.

Wolves’ centre-backs and goalscorers Conor Coady and Romaine Saiss both recorded the highest individual xG in the match of 0.58 and 0 57 respectively. Ings had the highest xG for Villa, as he also took three shots in the game along with Watkins and Cash also taking three shots each. Traore made the most dribbles while McGinn had most passes in the final third.

Aston Villa’s shot map shows that they took most of their shots from the edge of the box either inside or outside. They took 5 shots in the game and scored one from near the penalty spot.

Wolverhampton’s shot map shows that they did not have many opportunities in the game. They scored two goals from corners to come from 2-0 down to 2-2 before Ruben Neves scoring a world-class goal from long range.

The xT timeline of the match shows that this was a game of two halves. The first half saw very few opportunities and ended with a 0-0 scoreline. There was minimal xG generation in the first half. In the second half, the game completely changed as Villa took the lead and extended it before 70minutes, but the visitors came back and scored thrice, thereby recording a much higher xG.

Aston Villa’s pass matrix shows that they had a decent number of passes in the match. Mings, Targett and Tuanzebe were the best passers in the match, with all three attempting more than 50 passes and receiving around 35-40.

Wolves’ pass matrix shows that they had a decent number of passes to show for their 48% possession. Ruben Neves attempted the most passes for them with 57, while also receiving the joint-highest alongside Semedo with 33 passes.

Aston Villa’s passing zones show that they completed a vast majority of their passes in midfield. Matt Targett and Matty Cash both put in six crosses into the box, while Targett and Buendia put in four passes each into the box as well.

Wolves’ passing zones show that they had most of their passes in theory own half. Ruben Neves was their overall best player, as he scored the winner and also put in the most passes into the opposition box with seven and most crosses into the box for Wolves with four.

Dean Smith’s team’s xT creation zones show that they did not create enough threat in the final third, especially around the opponent box. John McGinn had the highest xT from passing for the home side.

Other than McGinn, Buendia also had very high xT creation for the Villans. In terms of xT creation from dribbling, Matty Cash had the highest xT generation.

Bruno Lage’s Wolves side created most of their xT in the second half, especially in the last 10 minutes. The xT creation zones show that enough xT was created in and around the opposition box.

Ruben Neves has the highest xT generation from passing for Wolves, followed closely by Daniel Podence. Adama Traore had the highest xT generation from dribbling in the match.

Aston Villa faced most of their defensive duels in their own half, winning very few. John McGinn won the most with three.

Villa players had to contest most of the aerial duels in the two 18-yard boxes, with crosses and aerial passes. Cash and Konsa both won four aerial duels each.

There were a lot of loose ball duels contested in the match, all over the pitch. Mings and McGinn both made three recoveries each for them.

Wolverhampton Wanderers contested a lot of defensive duels in the match, especially in their own half. Romaine Saiss won three defensive duels for his team.

There were a few aerial duels contested in the match, in both the penalty boxes. Marcal and Ruben Neves both won three aerial duels each.

A lot of loose ball duels were contested all over the pitch. Killman and Saiss both winning three loose balls each for the Wolves.

The late comeback win has taken Wolves up to 8th in the standings with 12 points from their first eight games. After a slowish start to the season, they are now getting better results and should start aiming higher. On the other hand, Aston Villa’s recent form slip sees them with just 10 points from their eight games, and are now placed at 12th.
