Newly promoted Brentford welcomed league leaders and current European champions Chelsea to the Brentford Community Stadium for Matchday 8 of the 2021-22 Premier League season. The Blues were able to come out with a 1-0 away win, after a tight match in which they were lucky to not conceded in the last 20 minutes after constant pressure from The Bees. Ben Chilwell scored the only goal of the match on the stroke of halftime.

The average positions of the home players show that they had to defend through most of the game, therefore, had average positions in their own half. Their subs came in and made a lot of attacks in the last 20 minutes.

The average positions of the visitors show that they had most of the possession in the match and had a lot of attacks. There players’ average positions are predominantly in the opposition half, with the wing-backs providing the width.

Brentford were the better side going forward, as they took a total of 13 shots, hitting the target six times. They had an xG of 1.75 in the match with 43% of the possession. On the other hand, the visitors took just seven shots and hit the target only once for their goal. They had 57% possession in the match and dominated most of the game except the last 20 minutes.

Romelu Lukaku and Christian Norgaard had the highest xG in the game with 0 49 each, followed by Marcus Forss with 0.39. Timo Werner completed the most dribbles in the match while Malang Sarr had the most passes into the final third.

Brentford’s shot map shows that they took almost all of their 13 shots in the march from inside the box, with only one shot from long range. They hit the target six times, but could not go past Chelsea’s shot-stopper Mendy.

Chelsea’s shot map shows that they took only seven shots in the game, a few from outside and the rest from inside the box. Ben Chilwell scored the only goal with a volley from the edge of the box.

The xT generation timeline of the match shows that the first half had very few opportunities, except in the last five minutes when Brentford hit the post and Chelsea scored. The second half was full of a lot of opportunities, especially for The Bees, but no goals were scored.

Brentford’s pass matrix shows that they had a decent number of passes in the match. Jorgensen attempted the most passes with 72, while Jannson received the most passes with 37.

The Blues’ pass matrix shows that they had a lot of passes to show for their 57% possession in the match. Ruben Loftus-Cheek attempted 64 passes and received 56, the highest for the Blues and Christensen also attempted 72 passes.

The Bees’ passing zones show that they had a lot of passes in midfield and the right side of attack. Jensen put in six passes into the opposition box, while Mbuemo put in four crosses into the box as well.

Chelsea’s passing zones show that they completed most of their passes in the central areas of defence and midfield. Timo Werner put in four crosses and four passes into the box, while Kante put in a total of six passes into the opposition box.

The xT creation zones of the Bees’ show that they had a lot of opportunities Nd threats created in and around the opposition box, especially in the second half.

Jorgensen had the highest xT from passes, followed by Jensen and Henry. In terms of xT from dribbling, Sergi Canos had the highest xT, followed by Onyeka and Mbuemo.

The xT creation zones for Chelsea show that they had a lot of threats and opportunities in and around the opposition box. Azpilicueta had the highest xT from passing for them.

Other than Azpilicueta, N’golo Kante also had decent xT fron passing. Timo Werner had the highest xT generation from dribbling.

Thomas Frank’s Brentford side contested a lot of defensive duels inside their own half. Jansson and Norgaard both won three duels each for their team.

There were a lot of aerial duels contested by the Bees’ in the opposition box due to the crosses and aerial passes put in by them. Ivan Toney won 10 aerial duels for them, followed by Jansson and Pinnock with six each.

The Bees contested most of the loose ball duels in the opposition half. Norgaard won four loose ball duels, while Mbuemo made three recoveries for Brentford.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea contested almost all the defensive duels in their own half and were able to win a lot of them. Chalobah and Chilwell both won three duels each for them.

The Blues’ had to contest a very large number of aerial duels in their own box due to a large number of crosses put in. All of the Chelsea defenders were able to win three or four aerial duels in the match.

There were a lot of loose balls to be contested all over the pitch for the Chelsea players. Ruben Loftus-Cheek made five loose ball recoveries in the match, which was the highest.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea were able to secure a 1-0 victory on the weekend to maintain their spot at the top of the Premier League standings. They now have 19 points from their eight games and are one point ahead of Liverpool and two ahead of Man City. On the other hand, Thomas Frank’s Brentford have slipped to eight with 12 points from their eight games.
