There has been one common thread through all of the rising storm about Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. For all the criticism that’s come from fans and pundits, reaching a peak this week after his awful error against Man City, the constant has been his rock solid backing from his manager Enzo Maresca.
Maresca has consistently defended him, pointed to his strengths and his good games, and denied he’s ever thinking about changing his choice in goal. In today’s press conference, however, that support began to slip. Asked whether he had decided who would be his keeper for Monday night’s game against West Ham, Maresca admitted he didn’t know:
“Not yet, not yet. The decision… we have two or three days. Any decision I take, I feel good. Filip [Jorgensen] or Robert, we see. Any decision will be okay.”
On the one hand, we’re delighted to see he’s open minded to making a change. On the other hand, it’s a pretty scary situation to be in where you
It’s also a sign of how badly things are going with the goalkeeper situation at all that it’s the end of January and we’re on the verge of making a swap – not to mention the fact that this would make it the second season in a row where we’ve changed our first choice stopper mid-season.
Filip Jorgensen trains with the goalkeepers in the USA.
Maresca insists that “any decision will be ok,” that the team will be fine with either goalkeeper in goal. But let’s face it – that’s wishful thinking.
