Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea have agreed a deal with Benfica for the Argentine.
The Telegraph report that the deal is worth in excess of £105m.
Chelsea will pay the fee in six instalments, including £40m upfront.
Chelsea now face a race against time to get the necessary paperwork completed before the transfer window closes at 11pm GMT.
The fee quoted means the 2022 World Cup winner will become the most expensive player in Premier League history, overtaking Jack Grealish, should the deal go through.
It’s a quite spectacular end to the January transfer window for Chelsea, who’ve already spent an enormous amount of money.
Fernandez is set to be the Blues’ eighth (yes, EIGHTH) arrival this month, joining Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badashile, Andrey Santos, Malo Gusto, David Dart Fofana, Joao Felix and Noni Madueke.
Even with the well-known injury issues, Graham Potter’s squad is now stacked with talent for the second half of the 2022/23 season after Todd Boehly’s spending spree.
Fernandez’s impending signing really could be a game-changer in midfield, which has been a problem area for the Blues this campaign.

The 22-year-old showcased his enormous talent to the world out in Qatar as he played a pivotal role in Argentina's triumphant World Cup campaign.
He won the World Cup’s Best Young Player Award after a string of superb displays.
Fernandez has also been seriously impressive at Benfica, despite only joining the club from River Plate last summer.
In 29 appearances for the Portuguese club across all competitions, he’s scored four goals and assisted a further seven.
Not bad for a central midfielder, eh?
Fernandez will no doubt be a key contributor for Chelsea from the outset.
He could make his debut for the Blues on Friday in their Premier League clash with Fulham at Stamford Bridge.
