Liverpool and Manchester United are amongst the clubs currently negotiating to start a new ‘European Premier League’.

That’s according to a bombshell story by Sky on Tuesday, which claims that the English duo are in talks with other sides across the continent, and hope to set up a competitor to the Champions League within the next two years.

Sky have revealed that a finance package thought to be worth in the region of $6bn is being finalised to help set up the new division.

Fixtures would be played during the regular European season and a formal announcement is believed to be as soon as the end of October.

A source described the bombshell news as “potentially the most important development in world club football for decades”.

This new competition would in all likelihood usurp the Champions League with the tournament comprising a round-robin, home and away format, and the top eight teams going through to an end of season knockout.
