England World Cup squad odds: Who will Gareth Southgate include in his 23-man team? | OneFootball

BetVictor have issued their latest odds on who Gareth Southgate will select as part of his tournament squad for the Qatar World Cup.

England have just two games left before they board the plane to the Middle East in November and Southgate will have little chance to experiment with his team from this point.

That will be a major worry given the shockingly poor display that the Three Lions mustered in their recent Nations League encounters – the highlight of which coming in their 4-0 home defeat to Hungary on Monday evening.

It was England’s worst defeat on English soil since 1928, and after three other winless matches in which the team managed only a single goal, it’s fair to say optimism across the nation has dropped like the air from a popped balloon.

Southgate’s honeymoon period after his recent tournament successes is well truly and over, which means the pressure is on him now more than ever to get his team selection right.

Something which, admittedly, is a ferociously debated topic amongst the nation.

But who do the experts at BetVictor reckon are bankers for Southgate’s squad?

Goalkeepers:

Aaron Ramsdale – 1/10Jordan Pickford – 1/8Nick Pope – 1/2

Dean Henderson – 3/1Sam Johnstone – 6/1

Whilst Ramsdale and Pickford are both very short odds, it’s interesting to see the Arsenal stopper leading the way. The two keepers will certainly be in a battle to impress come the start of the next Premier League season as they fight for that coveted number one spot.

Defenders:

Harry Maguire – 1/10John Stones – 1/10Ben Chilwell – 1/8Trent Alexander-Arnold – 1/6Luke Shaw – 1/6Kyle Walker – 1/5Reece James – 1/3Ben White – 4/7

Fikayo Tomori – 1/1Conor Coady – 5/4Kieran Trippier – 13/8Tyrone Mings – 5/2Marc Guehi – 11/4

This area of the field is sure to spark plenty of controversy. Based on BetVictor’s odds, England will take three centre-backs, three right-backs and two left-backs, although Walker can certainly double up as a central defender also.

That would mean Tomori misses out despite his stellar season at the heart of the AC Milan defence and England fans can expect to see the usual Maguire/Stones partnership.

Declan Rice – 1/10Mason Mount – 1/10Jude Bellingham – 1/8Kalvin Phillips – 1/4Jordan Henderson – 2/5

Conor Gallagher – 2/1James Ward-Prowse – 5/2James Maddison – 4/1

The midfield seems to be pretty set the way BetVictor sees it. Rice, Mount and Bellingham are bankers.

Meanwhile, Phillips is actually shorter odds than Henderson to make the squad. Given Henderson has been an instrumental figure in Liverpool’s trophy-laden campaign whilst Phillips’ performance have offered little to shout home about, that might come as a surprise to many.

Forwards:

Rashford and Sancho to make the squad? Now that would raise some eyebrows…

The two United wingers really were poor last campaign and bar a drastic improvement in 2022/2023 we just can’t see how Southgate could justify their selection over a player in the form of Bowen.

Abraham would also miss out despite scoring 26 goals in all competitions for Roma and offering something that bit different up-front.
