The Three Lions made it to the quarter-finals in Qatar before losing to France, and they’ll be hoping to go further next year as the competition heads to the United States, Mexico and Canada. Of course, there is a new man at the helm, with Thomas Tuchel taking over from Gareth Southgate.

The German made a great start to life in charge of the Three Lions, beating Albania 2-0 on Friday thanks to goals from debutant Myles Lewis-Skelly and record scorer Harry Kane.

There were a few surprise names in Tuchel’s first England squad. Dan Burn got his first call-up, as did Myles Lewis-Skelly. There was also a return to the squad for Jordan Henderson, which brought a lot of conversation.

Cole Palmer had to pull out of the squad due to injury, with Morgan Gibbs-White replacing him.

Arsenal teenager Lewis-Skelly scored a wonderful debut goal and looked at complete ease with senior international football against Albania and will hope to get the nod again here, while Burn and Curtis Jones will feel they’ve done enough to earn another start.

That being said, Tuchel may well choose to rotate, with the likes of Jarrod Bowen and Anthony Gordon likely to come in for Phil Foden and the returning Marcus Rashford, the latter showing flashes of quality against Albania. Marc Guehi and Levi Colwill will both be itching for starts to prove to Tuchel what they can do at the heart of England’s defence.

Can England maintain incredible record against new opponent?

England haven’t missed a World Cup tournament since 1994, the last time it was held in the United States. They’ll hope that doesn’t serve as an omen and the signs from their opening qualifier against Albania were very promising.

Since that failure, the Three Lions have lost just four of their 67 World Cup qualifying matches. The most recent defeat came in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, a 1-0 away loss to Ukraine. But, England had won their first eight games and qualified for the World Cup, so it didn’t really do any damage.

England won their final qualifying game 3-0 against Belarus and have been unbeaten since. The Three Lions have won 24 of their past 32 World Cup qualifying games, drawing the other eight. In each of the past two World Cup qualifying campaigns, England boasted a record of eight wins and two draws. They’ve only conceded six goals across their past 21 World Cup qualifying games, scoring 59.

They face a brand-new opponent here having never played against Latvia previously. The 11 Wolves — who beat Andorra 1-0 in their opening game — have a poor record against top European sides, failing to win in 22 previous games against Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Portugal, France and Belgium, combined, picking up just two draws.
