England ease past Senegal

Scorers: Henderson 39, Kane 45+2â€Č, Saka 57â€Č.

England have set up a mouth-watering quarter-final clash with France after comfortably dispatching of Senegal.

Gareth Southgate’s side will meet the current holders in Al Khor on Saturday after a clinical performance against the African champions.

Senegal had started the better of the two sides and should’ve moved in-front early on when Ismalia Sarr got on to the end of Krepin Diatta’s low cross but the Watford winger poked over from six yards out.

Jordan Pickford then had to come to England’s rescue to keep out Boulaye Dia’s shot from close range with a strong one-handed save.

But it was England who did manage to break the deadlock with their first shot on target, with Jordan Henderson slotting into the bottom corner after being picked out by Jude Bellingham just inside the box.

Harry Kane then grabbed his first goal of the tournament to extend their advantage in first half stoppage time, drilling into the bottom corner to finish off a stunning counter attack involving Bellingham and Phil Foden.

Bukayo Saka put the game beyond all doubt early into the second half, dinking the ball over Edouard Mendy after a stunning low ball into him from Foden.

Giroud and Mbappé guide France into the last-eight

Scorers: Giroud 44â€Č, MbappĂ© 75â€Č, 90+1; Lewandowski (PEN) 90+9â€Č.

Olivier Giroud became France’s record all-time top goalscorer and Kylian MbappĂ© bagged a brace as the World Cup holders saw off Poland to progress into the quarter-finals.

Giroud had missed a glaring opportunity to reach the milestone earlier in the game, somehow failing to turn the ball into an empty net from six yards out from Ousmane DembĂ©lé’s pass across goal.

Poland were left ruing two golden chances of their own moments later, with the ball falling to Piotr ZieliƄski inside the penalty area but Hugo Lloris produced a stunning save to keep out his effort before RaphaĂ«l Varane cleared Jakub Kaminski’s follow-up off the line.

France made their opponents pay for those misses just before the half-time break and this time Giroud wasn’t going to miss. The Milan striker scooped the ball into the far bottom corner after being played through in the box by MbappĂ©.

CzesƂaw Michniewicz’s side remained competitive in the game during the second half with defender Kamil Glik coming close with a header from a corner but the final chapter of the game was to be written by MbappĂ©, as he scored two stunning goals to put the game beyond all doubt.

A stunning France counter-attack saw Dembélé drive into space left by a Polish attack, and his through ball found Mbappé in space inside the penalty area with the PSG forward taking one touch before curling the ball into the top corner.

He added his second, and his ninth overall at a World Cup finals – more than Pele and Cristiano Ronaldo – in stoppage time, receiving the ball from substitute Marcus Thuram before blasting the ball into far corner to leave Wojciech Szczęsny sprawling.

Poland’s performance deserved a goal and they managed a consolation with the last kick of the game – Robert Lewandowski dispatching from the spot after Dayot Upamecano had handled in the area. The Barcelona man missed the original spot-kick but the referee ordered a re-take after a number of French players had encroached in the area.

Didier Deschamps’ men move into the last-eight in the defence of their trophy.
