Speaking ahead of England’s match against Ireland on Saturday, interim manager Lee Carsley has said that Olympique de Marseille forward Mason Greenwood (22) is not being considered for a recall to the national team.

Greenwood joined Marseille in a €26m move from Manchester United this summer. It came after a loan spell at La Liga side Getafe, which itself came in the wake of charges of attempted rape. In 2022, Greenwood was arrested and later charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. In 2023, these charges were discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service after they revealed that they no longer had a “realistic prospect of conviction” due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that had come to light. Greenwood has denied the allegations.

Since those charges, Greenwood has been out of the frame at international level and has not added to the solitary cap he earned back in September 2020. In his first three games at Marseille, the Englishman has scored five goals, however, Carsley has confirmed that that form will not earn a recall.

“Mason isn’t a player that we can consider. I’m aware of how he is doing but he wasn’t under consideration,” said Carsley, who is currently in interim charge of the Three Lions, following Gareth Southgate’s exit earlier in the summer.
