England fans watched on as a much-changed team won 3-0 away against Greece.
Only last month, a very different England team, both in terms of personnel and performance, lost 2-1 to the same opposition at Wembley and indeed, were fortunate to only lose by a one goal margin.
England fans definitely seemed to like what they saw, as Lee Carsley made eight changes to his team that won 3-1 in Finland, many of those changes due to ‘injured’ players dropping out of his initial named squad for the November internationals.
Amongst the many comments, particularly interesting to read those about the two Newcastle United players who got on the pitch last night on Athens.
Anthony Gordon started the game and played until the 66th minute when Lee Carsley replaced all of his front three. Whilst Lewis Hall came on a sub for the second half, his very first minutes for England.
England fans commenting on BBC Sport after Greece 0 England 3 and especially comments regarding Newcastle United pair Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon:
‘Really good performance tonight, Hall at LB has that spot for years.’
‘Much preferred the balance in the second half with a left-footed left back!’
‘Yes, thought Hall did well.’
‘Lewis Hall is such a positive.
Genuinely, with the way left back has been, he could amass 30 or 40 caps in the next few years.’
‘Pickford’s best game for ages, Hall at LB looked like it was his 100th cap, Gallagher and Jones had energy in the middle, Madueke and Gordon looked dangerous.’
‘Tonight we had 2 wingers running at their full backs, we defended as a unit and the Newcastle lad showed what we’ve been missing at LB.’
‘An actual left back playing for England!!!’
‘It’s insane we used to be so strong there. Pearce, Winterburn, Cole, Bridge, Baines.
Really does go in cycles sometimes.
Lewis Hall looks an absolute diamond there. Probably Chelsea worst recent sale in terms of how much they’ll regret it.’
‘Would’ve been glad to see Hall at LB for the blues, tho did get a decent price for him c£30m with add ons (that would prob include an England call up.) Good luck to the lad, hope he does well with the Geordies. Chelsea youth products released doing well throughout the leagues, would’ve liked to see them all develop together in blue. Guehi, Tomori Livramento, CHO, Mount, Gallagher, Tammy, Solanke.’
‘Hall and Gordon playing regularly on the left for Newcastle every week and now hopefully for England can only be a good thing.’
‘A lot better balance in the side and Hall was outstanding at left back. Midfield much better without the number ten argument. Reasons to be cheerful.’
‘How refreshing to see an England team that looked like they really wanted it. Youngsters looked like they had the passion that wearing the three lions should bring.’
‘We should have 8 or 9 players “injured” more often. Team was a breath of fresh air compared to the stale play of the likes of Foden, Saka, Rice and Grealish.’
‘Madueke becoming very good.
Watch out saka.
Bellingham and Palmer fight for 1 spot.
