Lieke Martens fired the Dutch into the lead in the first half but Alessia Russo levelled matters for England 19 minutes into the second period. The game looked set to end level until Jansen smashed home the winner for the hosts at the death.
After a quiet opening at Stadion Galgenwaard, the game finally sparked into life on the half-hour mark when Caitlin Dijkstra forced a good save from England keeper Mary Earps.
Four minutes later, the Dutch were ahead when England gave away cheap possession and Martens found the corner of the net. The goal came with controversy with a Dutch player potentially being in an offside position when possession was won.
Both sides had chances in the final minutes of the first half. Rachel Daly saw a shot strike the post before home keeper Daphne Van Domselaar made a stunning double save to deny Lauren Hemp and Lucy Bronze. The woodwork then came to England’s rescue at the other end as Lineth Beerensteyn’s shot hit the bar.
Hemp went close in the second half but her effort was hacked off the goal-line before the same player was denied by a world-class save from Van Domselaar.
England deservedly levelled matters in the 64th minute when Russo hit a shot on the turn and managed to find the corner of the Dutch net.
The hosts responded to that setback and Victoria Pelova forced a save out of Earps at full stretch before Martens could only shoot straight at the England keeper when in a decent position to score.
The game looked set to end level until Dutch substitute Jansen rifled the ball into the top corner in second half injury time to secure the three points for her side.
The UEFA Women’s Nations League resumes next month when England face Belgium in a double-header while The Netherlands take on Scotland.
