England won’t be repeating their 2017 triumph at this year’s U17 World Cup after they were eliminated by Uzbekistan at the round of 16 stage on Wednesday.
Having topped a group which featured tournament holders Brazil, Iran and New Caledonia, Greg Lincoln’s side were considered one of the favourites to lift the trophy in Indonesia this year.
But they were shocked by Uzbekistan, who will now face France or Senegal in the quarter-finals.
Amirbek Saidov gave the Asian side an early lead in Jakarta, only for Manchester City youngster Joel Ndala to draw the young Lions level before half-time.
However, a stunning second half free-kick from Lazizbek Mirzaev proved to be the match-winner and sent England home.
The other quarter-finals are shaping up nicely, with Spain taking on Germany, Brazil facing Argentina, and Mali up against Morocco.
