England came from behind to beat Italy 2-1 and reach the final of the U19 European Championships courtesy of a late winner from Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.

Scorers: Miretti (PEN) 12′; Scott 58′, Quansah 82′.

The Italians nipped ahead in the 12th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Fabio Miretti had been sent sprawling in the box by Brooke Norton-Cuffy.

Juventus teenager Miretti then stepped up and squeezed the spot-kick past Matthew Cox, who had guessed the right way, to give his country the lead.

England struggled to create any clear-cut chances to get themselves back into the game but they equalised midway through the second half courtesy of substitute Alex Scott’s goal.

The Bristol City midfielder rose highest to head home Alfie Devine’s corner with his first touch to level proceedings.

It then seemed the encounter was heading to extra-time with Italy goalkeeper Sebastiano Desplanches pulling off a smart save to deny Jamie Bynoe-Gittens before Cox kept out Tommaso Baldanzi from close range.

But there was one more decisive moment in the 82nd minute as Harvey Vale’s corner was flicked on by an Italian head to land on to Quansah who guided the ball home to book his nation’s place in Sunday’s final.

England will play the winner of tonight’s other semi-final clash between Italy and Israel.
