England coach explains: That’s why Dier didn’t make the European Championship squad

On Tuesday, England national team coach Gareth Southgate presented his provisional squad for the European Championship in Germany. Despite his consistently solid performances, Eric Dier will miss out on a European Championship ticket.

While Eric Dier spent almost the entire first half of the season as a reserve at Tottenham Hotspur, his performance curve rose rapidly with the winter transfer to FC Bayern. Since then, he has matured into a regular player in Munich and has shone with strong performances in the Champions League in particular.

Nevertheless, England coach Gareth Southgate believes he is currently „just behind the other players we have selected.“ John Stones, who is now only the number three centre-back at Manchester City, and Harry Maguire, who only finished eighth in the Premier League with Manchester United, are likely to form the regular duo in central defence for the Three Lions.

All this despite Southgate admitting that Dier has played very well for Bayern and that he knows they are very happy with him in Munich. However, he did not provide any detailed reasons for not nominating the new winter signing.

Harry Kane captain of the England national team again

Even though England’s current European Championship squad is still provisional, Dier is unlikely to have high hopes of being called up. With a squad of 33 players, Southgate’s approach seems to be to thin out his squad a little before the final squad announcement rather than bringing in new players.

Harry Kane has once again been named as captain of the England national team, which he will lead onto the pitch without his mate Eric Dier, whom he remembers from their time together at Tottenham. Kane and Co. will then face Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia in the group matches.
