Leah Williamson’s season is over and she will miss this summer’s Women’s World Cup as Arsenal have confirmed she has ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament.
The England captain twisted awkwardly and suffered the injury early in Arsenal’s WSL defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday.
Williamson will miss the remainder of the season with Arsenal still in the WSL title race and the Champions League semi-finals.
The 26-year-old also now has no chance of being fit in time for the Lionesses’ World Cup campaign in summer. Williamson captained England to European Championship glory last summer.
She becomes the third key Arsenal player to suffer this injury this season, following Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema, and joins a host of stars from the women’s game — including Alexia Putellas, Ada Hegerberg, Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Giulia Gwinn — to suffer the injury in recent times.
