England head coach Sarina Wiegman was pleased to see her side score 10 goals against Luxembourg this evening.

Wiegman demanded better finishing from the Lionesses after they converted just eight of their 46 goal attempts against North Macedonia on Friday but they were more clinical in their victory over Luxembourg this evening as they netted 10 of their 36 chances and kept their opponents from even touching the ball in their own 18-yard box.

When speaking in the post-match press conference in which FAWSL Full-Time were present, Wiegman said that she was happy with the 10-0 win.

“I think the performance was good,” Wiegman said. “It is pretty hard to make the game against such opponents, you have possession most of the game and you have to keep the ball tempo up and switch the field lots. They were dropping deeper and deeper as they game went on so the spaces were so small.

“In the second half, we had 21 players in the final third and that’s so hard to utilise the small spaces that we have but we still managed to score 10 goals. I think as a team, we have tried to create a variety of chances – through the centre, switching field with crosses and we scored 10 and that’s okay. What I also saw was that when we made one or two mistakes, everyone was in transition and we won the ball back within five seconds and that is what teamwork is all about, I really enjoyed that.

“I think we did a good job in scoring 10 goals.”

Wiegman only took charge of the Lionesses at the start of this month and this camp has been her first with the squad. The Dutch coach said that the group have achieved several targets set out for the camp.

She added “I am very excited, I have had a really good time in these 10 days, I have really enjoyed myself and I think that we have got closer to each other.

“We had some goals for this week, that was to get to know each other better and we have spoken with each player and every staff member, to play well and improve our game, to score goals and concede none and to have some fun and I think that we all reached those goals.”

England are back in FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifying action next month when they host Northern Ireland at Wembley before travelling to Latvia.
