With Leicester entering the game bottom of the table and Tottenham arriving off the back of nine consecutive league defeats, and under caretaker boss Vicky Jepson for the first time, a tense and cagey first half was anything but a surprise.

The second was far more eventful and it looked like it would be Leicester who would take the lead as they had a header blocked off of the line and the ball fell to Ruby Mace with the goal gaping, but she could only fine the bar with her effort on the rebound.

That was the first act of the minute that could define Tottenham’s season. The second came at the other end, as Bethany England responded immediately, firing home a screamer from just outside the box. The goal was England’s fourth goal in five games since joining the club from Chelsea in January and her best yet.

Leicester rallied but, with the match opened up, Tottenham went closer to providing the game with another goal. Kit Graham struck just wide after some fine work from Ashleigh Neville, Celina Bizet hit the side-netting after rounding Leicester goalkeeper Janina Leitzig, and the excellent Rosella Ayane struck over the bar as Spurs chased a second.

That second goal never arrived but Tottenham won’t mind after holding on to a crucial, long-awaited win that opens up a five-point gap to Leicester in the relegation zone.
