The Uefa Nations League continued on Monday evening with England’s clash with Germany topping the bill.
Here’s what happened.
Scorers: Shaw 72′, Mount 75′, Kane (pen) 83′; Gündoğan (pen) 52′, Havertz 67′, 87′
England came from 2-0 down to lead Germany 3-2 at Wembley, only to be denied victory by an error from goalkeeper Nick Pope.
The first chance of the game came from a Pope mistake, when his heavy touch was pounced upon by Jamal Musiala, but İlkay Gündoğan’s resulting shot flew over the bar.
England’s first chance came in the 25th minute, when Luke Shaw found Raheem Sterling with a brilliant pass in behind the defence, and the Chelsea forward drew a good save from Marc-André ter Stegen in the Germany goal. Moments later, Harry Kane went close with a dipping volley which just dropped wide.
Into the second half and Germany were awarded a penalty when Harry Maguire tripped Musiala after the defender had been caught in possession in his own box. Gündoğan stepped up and slotted home coolly for 1-0.
The second goal came soon after, when Maguire was again dispossessed and Kai Havertz found the net with a super curling effort which kissed the woodwork on its way in.
England soon pulled one back, however, and it was Shaw who found the net with a goal which wasn’t too dissimilar to his strike at the same end in the Euro 2020 final.
And the equaliser came just three minutes later, when substitute Bukayo Saka played in fellow substitute Mason Mount, and the Chelsea man fired past Ter Stegen for 2-2.
England were then awarded a penalty when Nico Schlotterbeck caught Jude Bellingham on the shin with a studs-up challenge. Kane stepped up and found the top corner to complete a remarkable turnaround.
But there was to be another twist, when Serge Gnabry’s effort from outside the box was spilled by Pope, and Havertz was on hand to tap in the rebound for 3-3.
England’s wait for a win in a competitive match now stands at six matches.
Scorers: Raspadori 27′, Dimarco 52′
Italy almost took an early lead when Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s cross was fumbled by goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi but luckily for the Hungarian, the ball was cleared off the line by Attila Szalai.
The Azzurri did go in front in the 27th minute, when a short backpass from Ádám Nagy was closed down well by Wilfried Gnonto and Giacomo Raspadori was left with a simple tap in.
Hungary went in search of an equaliser but it was Italy who struck again early in the second half, when Federico Dimarco ghosted in at the back post to finish Bryan Cristante’s cross.
At the other end, Gianluigi Donnarumma was soon called into action to make a big save to deny Ádam Szalai.
Hungary appealed for a penalty in the 79th minute when substitute Martin Ádám appeared to be pushed in the back by Alessandro Bastoni but after a VAR check, the referee waved play on.
