Lucy Bronze has been hailed as the best player in the world after helping England reach the Euro 2022 final.

Bronze assisted Beth Mead’s opener and headed home a second shortly after half-time as the Lionesses beat Sweden 4-0 at Bramall Lane.

Meanwhile, substitute Alessia Russo scored a sublime back-heel and Chelsea star Fran Kirby pulled off an audacious lob to complete another emphatic victory and set up a date with destiny at Wembley on Sunday.

Football stars laud Bronze

Bronze has long been considered one of England’s most integral players and is closing in on 100 international appearances for the Lionesses.

The Barcelona star has twice been named the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year and was named the Best FIFA Women’s Player in December 2020.

While Bronze has scored just 11 goals in her England career, they have regularly come at crucial times.

Understandably, a number of players, past and present, were quick to praise the right-back online.

Alex Scott tweeted: “That’s the world’s best,” alongside a GIF of the 30-year-old.

Meanwhile, Chelsea star Raheem Sterling praised both Bronze and Arsenal forward Beth Mead, who notched her sixth goal of the tournament on the night.

“ Bronze, Mead” he wrote, alongside the handshake emoji.

Mead and Bronze were not the only England stars to receive plaudits.

West Ham captain Declan Rice singled out midfielder Keira Walsh for praise. The Man City is renowned for her exceptional passing range and she proved it once again against Sweden.

Former England skipper Wayne Rooney, who remains the country’s all-time top scorer, hailed the whole team and described the result as “well deserved.”

“What a performance by @Lionesses tonight,” he said. “A well-deserved #WEURO2022 final coming up. Congratulations to all the players and staff.”

England go marching on

The Lionesses have now reached the Euros final for the second time, having reached the same stage in 2009.

On that occasion, England lost 6-2 to Germany and there is every chance they could meet the Germans again at Wembley on Sunday.

Germany are eight-time winners of the competition and face France on Wednesday as they bid for their seventh title in the last eight tournaments.

Wiegman’s side will be bidding to go one step further than the England men’s achieved last year.

Gareth Southgate’s team lost in a penalty shoot-out against Italy to deny the country a first taste of major silverware since 1966.

But the Lionesses will not let the lingering memory of that match impact their preparations for Sunday’s final. History beckons and major silverware for England’s women has never been closer.
