Harry Maguire is in the spotlight once again due to his performance in England‘s 3-3 draw with Germany.

The two European giants played out an absolute thriller at Wembley Stadium on Monday night, with Gareth Southgate’s side coming from 2-0 down in the second half.

Maguire was at fault for Germany’s first two goals. He gave away a penalty with a needless foul on Bayern Munich‘s Jamal Musiala, while it was his failed dribble that kickstarted the visitors’ counterattack for the second.

But aside from the two aforementioned mistakes, Maguire was fairly decent overall on the left of a back three.

The Manchester United defender also proved after the game that while his proneness to on-pitch errors is a concern, his commitment to playing for England can never, ever be questioned.

In footage captured by Diario AS journalist Guillermo Rai, Maguire can be seen limping out of Wembley with a suspected hamstring injury.

Despite the fact his critics are more vocal than ever right now, Maguire clearly battled through the pain barrier to play for England – and that has to be applauded.

Captain Harry Kane confirmed in a post-match interview that Maguire was indeed suffering from an injury in the latter stages of the contest.

“H [Maguire] had a pretty decent injury there at the end, where he played another five, 10 minutes, on almost one leg,” the Tottenham Hotspur striker said. “Great character from him, I’m really proud of him for that.”

Club colleague Luke Shaw also leapt to Maguire’s defence in the aftermath of the Wembley thriller.

Shaw praises Maguire’s ‘character’ after Germany game

“Harry is an amazing player, an amazing character,” Shaw said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “He has taken a lot of stick – probably more than I’ve ever seen before in football.

“He never hides away, he’s always there. You can have people who can hide away and not want to be in the spotlight.

“He keeps putting himself in the spotlight, it shows the strength and character he’s got. Everybody knows he’s an unbelievable player. At the moment the confidence might not be there because it could feel like the whole world is against him.

“It’s tough for him, but us as players and staff are all behind him because he’s a very important player.

“It shows Gareth’s trust because he’s played in both games [this week] – and look at the Euros what he’s done.

“People need to understand he’s a big part of the England team and have to accept it.”
