Thomas Tuchel continued his excellent start to life as England manager with a comfortable 3-0 win against Latvia at Wembley Stadium tonight.
The Three Lions dominated proceedings but found it difficult to break down Latvia. When they did, they failed to take their chances.
However, the dynamics of the game changed with half-time approaching when Reece James curled home a beautiful free kick to mark his first England start in three years.
James’ effort sent England into the break with a narrow lead, but Tuchel’s side stepped things up in the second half as goals from Harry Kane and Eberechi Eze sealed maximum points.
After swatting aside Albania 2-0 in the qualifier curtain-raiser, England will continue their road to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico against Andorra in June.
Jordan Pickford (6/10) – Had a stress-free day aside from a hairy moment that nearly gifted Latvia a goal against the run of play.
Reece James (8/10) – Not bad for his first England start in three years. Solid display on both sides of the ball. He showed his world-class quality with a glorious free kick that left the Latvia goalkeeper rooted to the spot.
Ezri Konsa (7/10) – Spurned a gilt-edged chance to make himself an unlikely hero in the first half. An otherwise solid display from the Aston Villa ace.
Marc Guehi (6/10) – Mopped up everything that came his way but looked shaky at times. Got away with a moment of madness that could have made him a villain in the first half.
Myles Lewis-Skelly (6/10) – A more reserved performance from the history-maker. His vast talent is clearly wasted in an inverted role.
Declan Rice (8/10) – A decent and hardworking all-round performance from the Arsenal star, who was good value for his assist.
Jude Bellingham (7/10) – His footwork and individual brilliance made him a handful for the Latvia backline. Did his best to give England a spark in the final third, but the end product was lacking.
Marcus Rashford (6/10) – A Jekyll and Hyde display from the Villa loanee. He made himself a handful on the left flank in the first half, but his influence waned as the game went on.
Morgan Rogers (7/10) – Solid performance. Hardworking, strong in duels, and came close to doubling England’s lead on the stroke of half-time. Played a key role in setting up England’s second goal.
Jarrod Bowen (5/10) – Was largely isolated on the right flank and struggled to make any real difference in the final third. Failed to stake a claim for a starting role.
Harry Kane (7/10) – An anonymous first-half display from the England captain, although he had little service. He sparked into life in the second 45 minutes and finally got his goal with a tap-in.
Eberechi Eze (8/10) – Proved to be a masterstroke substitution. Weaved his way through the Latvia defence before slotting home his first England goal via a deflection.
