Derby County are still expected to be able to complete a deal to re-sign Manchester United defender Teden Mengi on loan for next season, according to The Athletic.

It has previously been reported by Derbyshire Live that the Rams are keen to strike a fresh transfer agreement with Manchester United over the defender this summer. That comes with Wayne Rooney believed to be an admirer of the 19-year-old’s abilities.

That comes after Mengi played an important role for the Rams in helping them secure their Championship status during the second half of last term after arriving on loan in January. In total, the defender managed to make nine appearances in the English second tier for Rooney’s side.

Another recent report from The Athletic did suggest that it was expected that Manchester United would be content for the defender to make another temporary switch to Derby during the summer transfer window.

The latest update from The Athletic reaffirms that the Rams are still expected to be able to wrap up a fresh loan deal for Mengi at some stage this summer in what is a potential major boost for Rooney’s plans for next season.

The verdict

This is a very encouraging update for the Rams and suggests that they are still looking well placed to secure the services of Mengi for another campaign. Given the current situation that the Rams are in behind the scenes, it would be a major boost for them to still manage to bring a player with the 19-year-old’s potential into the club ahead of next term.

Mengi would be a player that can make a positive difference to their squad as he already showed during his temporary loan spell last season. The 19-year-old should only get better the more first-team experience he gets in the Championship and therefore you would expect him to be a strong performer for the Rams if he were to return.

Rooney’s connections to Manchester United make deals like this easier to achieve for Derby and you would expect them to be able to wrap a move for Mengi at some stage now that the Red Devils are once again open to loaning him out. This is a move that makes a lot of sense for both parties should it get over the line.
