Empoli sporting director Pietro Accardi was apologetic following his side’s heavy 7-0 defeat to Roma this evening in the Italian capital.

From the opening kickoff, the Tuscans found themselves overwhelmed by Jose Mourinho’s men. They conceded twice before the tenth minute and would go on to ship five more goals before the end of the affair.

“It’s necessary to show your face after a performance like that,” began Accardi during his post-match interview on DAZN.

“There’s obviously a ton of disappointment and regret, particularly for our fans, who still supported until the very end. My initial thoughts are with them.”

“Will Zanetti be sacked? The manager isn’t the only one responsible, all of us are. We’ll take some time to reflect because clearly something isn’t going right. It’s tough to explain because what we show in training isn’t what we see in the match.”

Adding, “I’m constantly present around the players and staff and witness the immense desire and determination this team shows in every single training session.”

“A result like tonight’s calls everything into question. Tactically we’ve had a lot of players come and go but I think the team fits well within several formations. When we build a team we look for flexible players for this very reason.”

Finally, “We’re going to use tonight as an opportunity for reflection but it doesn’t mean Zanetti won’t be the manager. We need to pull-off a sporting miracle if we want to avoid relegation. This is our first extremely difficult moment in three years.”

“Luckily it’s still early in the season and I’m still optimistic. Right now, though, we need to reflect on the best path forward for this team.”
