“I always say that they were only six months but the best of my sports career as to be at that club and lived what I lived is something that I will tell my children,” he said.

“I still have a good relationship (with Cristiano Ronaldo) and every now and again we send messages. Cristiano is who he is for his work, always the last to leave training, working out in the gym. As well as this he is a good guy, a great human being, like Marcelo.

“Along with [Emmanuel] Eboué, who I was with at Arsenal, he is the most fun teammate that I have had. Always joking, always laughing, he is incredible, the same as on the pitch and that is the way he lives his life.

“On the pitch he enjoys himself, he is a star. Marcelo is different, he does what he wants with the ball and is one of the best full-backs in the world.

“I got on well with Sergio Ramos, he was always in the gym and so was I. He liked to speak English but didn’t know it back then and I think now he speaks better. I taught him and he helped me with Spanish. The truth is that I am happy for them, that things have gone well.”

He spoke openly about a possible return to Spain as well.

“I would love to go and watch a game at the Bernabéu and say hello to the guys,” he continued.

“You never know when you’re career will end, I have a year left in Turkey and we will see what happens. I would like to play another year in La Liga, I love Spain and the Spanish, I want to learn the language and I love the way they treat people.”
