Emma Hayes gave a scathing assessment of Chelsea's first half performance against Real Madrid, after the Blues came from a goal behind to draw 1-1 in their Champions League group stage encounter.

Chelsea trailed in the first half, with Caroline Weir capitalising on a mistake from Ann-Katrin Berger to give the hosts the lead.

Jessie Fleming and Magdalena Eriksson were replaced at half time, and the Blues levelled just before the hour mark as Guro Reiten's penalty cannoned off the post and in off the head of the unfortunate Misa Rodriguez.

“I was really disappointed with our performance in the first half,” Hayes said. “It is the first time in a while that we have conceded such a poor goal. But the team performance was as bad as I’ve seen from us by our standards in and out of possession; I thought we were asleep.

“I was forced to make two changes and if I’m honest, anybody could have come off. When changes are made, everybody looks at individuals but the reality was that at 1-0 down, I wasn’t going to wait and the team knew that.

“Technically, I’ve never seen us give the ball away so cheaply. All parts of our play in-possession struggled. That’s something we’ll work at.“

The result still leaves Chelsea in pole position to qualify for the quarter-finals, and they top the group ahead of PSG and Real with two matches remaining.

The Blues face Vllaznia next Friday - a side they beat 8-0 last time out - and victory will confirm their quarter final place.

“I thought it was a great response from the team in the second half and we could have won it in the end,“ Hayes added. “It’s a point gained but a disappointing performance by our standards.“
