The 30-year-old, who plies his trade with Aston Villa, played an integral role in his country’s World Cup triumph in Qatar.
In fact, it’s no exaggeration to suggest that Lionel Messi and the rest of his Argentina teammates probably wouldn’t have lifted the World Cup on December 18 if it wasn’t for their goalkeeper.
Martinez produced arguably the most important save in Argentina’s history in the dying seconds of extra-time against France.
Randal Kolo Muani looked almost certain to score after finding himself one-on-one with Martinez, but the French forward was denied by the Argentina ‘keeper’s outstretched left leg.
Martinez’s astonishing save meant the game went to a penalty shootout, where the Mar del Plata shot-stopper went on to produce more heroics.
He saved Kingsley Coman’s spot-kick and did enough to prevent Aurelien Tchouameni hitting the target.
To celebrate Argentina’s first World Cup title since 1986, Martinez has got a new tattoo in the exact same position where he saved Kolo Muani’s late effort.
The tattoo of the World Cup trophy features three stars, each representing the years Argentina have won the trophy, along with the words: “Que la pasión te lleve a la gloria” – which translates to “May passion lead you to glory” in English.
While Martinez cemented his status as a national hero in Argentina with his performances during the recent World Cup, not everyone was left impressed by some of his antics.
There are even suggestions that Aston Villa boss Unai Emery may look to sell the goalkeeper.
While talking about Martinez, Emery told reporters: “When you have big emotion, sometimes it is difficult to control it.
“I will speak to him next week about some celebrations but I respect that he is now under the national team and when he will be with us, he is our responsibility then we can speak about it. We are so proud of him. He won the World Cup with his national team and it’s amazing.
“He’s coming back next week. I want him to rest now because after big emotion and hard work, he has to have some days off to rest then he’ll come back to work with us.”
