Arsenal have been knocked out of the Europa League after failing to score against Villarreal on Thursday.

The Gunners were down 2-1 after the first leg in Spain last week.

Despite boasting a number of high profile attackers, Mikel Arteta's side were unable to breach the Villarreal goal.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck the post, but other than that, the home side hardly presented a consistent threat.

The result was sweet revenge for Villarreal manager Unai Emery, who was sacked by the Gunners in 2019 after 18 months in charge.

It is a calamitous outcome for Arsenal, who will not play in Europe for the first time in 25 years.

Arteta will now see his transfer budget adjusted accordingly, while players could look to leave the club to seek European competition.

Villarreal will meet Manchester United in Gdansk on May 26 for what is their first ever European final.
