Lacklustre Arsenal draw a blank at the Emirates

Arsenal needed just one goal to complete a second leg turnaround against Villarreal but they never truly threatened to get it.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang twice struck the outside of the post and Emile Smith-Rowe went close with a dink just wide in the second half.

But Unai Emery’s Villarreal – who lost Samuel Chukwueze to a worrying looking injury in the first half – held onto their 2-1 first leg lead to book a spot in the club’s first ever European final.

Manchester United advance despite second leg defeat

Scorers: Džeko 57′, Cristante 60′, Zalewski 83′; Cavani 39′, 68′

With the damage already done with that 6-2 first leg victory, Manchester United are heading to Gdansk despite defeat in a high-scoring second leg.

Edinson Cavani bagged a brace for the visitors but goals from Edin Džeko, Bryan Cristante and substitute Nicola Zalewski meant Roma salvaged some pride at the Stadio Olimpico.

And so it will be United vs Villarreal in the final on 26 May.
