Switzerland, who had to do without goalkeeper Yann Sommer (Covid-19), started the game brightly and put the Three Lions under pressure in the opening stages in front of the 90,000 fans at the sold-out Wembley stadium. The Swiss were rewarded for their good start to the game and took the lead in the 22nd minute. Xherdan Shaqiri whipped in a cross from the right edge of the box and found Breel Embolo at the back post, who had no trouble guiding his header past Jordan Pickford. This was the striker’s ninth goal for the Swiss national team.

The Swiss, however, conceded an equaliser in first half stoppage time. Connor Gallagher played a square pass across the edge of the box finding Luke Shaw, who smashed the ball past Omlin. As the second half progressed, a draw looked the most likely outcome. In the 76th minute, however, a Jack Grealish corner found Marc Guehi, who headed the ball down on to the elbow of Steven Zuber. After looking at the monitor, the referee Andreas Ekberg pointed to the spot. Harry Kane converted the penalty to make it 2-1 and it proved to be the winning goal.

This was Murat Yakin’s first defeat in eight games in charge of the Swiss national team. Nico Elvedi was named on the bench and was an unused substitute. Switzerland’s next game is a home friendly against Kosovo on Tuesday 29th March (18:00 CEST).

Neuhaus and Ginter watch Germany’s win from the bench

A few hours after Switzerland’s defeat at Wembley, Germany kicked-off their friendly against Israel in Sinsheim. It was a comfortable evening for Hansi Flick’s side, who celebrated a 2-0 victory. Die Mannschaft took the lead in the 36th minute, when David Raum’s corner found Kai Havertz at the near post and the Chelsea player headed it home. Havertz’s Chelsea teammate, Timo Werner, doubled Germany’s lead in first half stoppage time when he got on the end of an Ilkay Gündogan free kick. The game came to a frantic conclusion with both sides missing penalty kicks in the last few minutes. Thomas Müller's penalty was fired against the post in the 89th minute and Yonatan Cohen's was saved in the 94th.

Borussia’s Florian Neuhaus and Matthias Ginter were unused substitutes in the opening international of 2022. The VfL duo’s next chance to play for the national team will come on Tuesday when Germany take on their old rivals Holland in Amsterdam.
