A section of Manchester United fans were irked to see Luke Shaw taking part in a video clip posted on TikTok while the club is enduring its worst crisis in decades.
The 29-year-old is suffering yet another injury-ridden campaign, as he has yet to start a Premier League fixture this term. His two league appearances against Ipswich and Everton both came off the bench. Since early December, the left-back has been out of action.
While it remains to be seen when his next outing on the pitch will ensue, Shaw did make a rather controversial appearance on social media.
The England international and his wife Anouska partied with English TV personality Molly-Mae Hague on New Year’s Eve, and this resulted in an “artistic collaboration” that saw the player taking part in a video clip released on TikTok.
Shaw was seen awkwardly mouthing ‘Your mum’s on benefits’, which is apparently part of a social media trend. Needless to say, Manchester United fans weren’t too delighted with this stunt, especially when the mood at Old Trafford is at an all-time low.
So as highlighted by the Daily Mail, several Red supporters took to social media to express their irritation with the injured star’s action.
“Luke Shaw doing TikTok’s with Molly Mae, he would never play again if Fergie was still in charge. Embarrassing club?!” wrote one X user.
“Manchester United in the worst form of my lifetime and Luke Shaw is doing TikTok’s with Molly Mae,” posted another one, with the disgruntled posts following up.
“There has to be a sense of professionalism. This player in particular has been unavailable for the equivalent of four years whilst making £150,000pw. We are 14th.”
“This is not acceptable of any Manchester United player especially one whose contributions minimal.”
“Scrolling on TikTok and I can’t believe who just told me that my mum is on benefits whilst my club is fighting relegation odds my head is hot.”

Nevertheless, a few fans jumped to Shaw’s defence, insisting he’s allowed to enjoy his life away from the football pitch.
“Yes, I forgot when someone is having a horrible time at work they’re not allowed to go out and celebrate New Years or have a social life.”
“Fans are so toxic its embarrassing! Yes a player allowed to have some fun and banter over new years with his friends and his family, get over it.”
