Borussia Dortmund will take a narrow lead to London as a blistering counter-attack saw off Chelsea on Wednesday night.

Chelsea had the ball in the net after 15 minutes but the goal was correctly disallowed after the referee spotted that Thiago Silva had handled it into the net.

A flurry of chances followed at both ends before the break, with the home support frustrated by some near misses, but again it was the Blues who came closest to the goal when João Félix rattled the crossbar shortly after he had curled over from a promising position.

That was one of 16 missed chances in the opening half – the most ever attempts in one half of a Champions League game without a goal being scored since Opta began collecting such data.

Shortly after the hour mark, Dortmund took the lead in electrifying fashion on a break from a Chelsea corner after Gregor Kobel saved well from Reece James, as the Bundesliga’s fastest ever recorded player displayed all of that pace he has to burn.

Karim Adeyemi received the ball in his own half and blitzed past Enzo Fernández into the Blues box before rounding Kepa and calmly tucking home to send the Westfalenstadion wild.

There was a late ill-tempered flurry as the benches cleared to square off but it was BVB who kept their cool to see things out.

Benfica win in Brugge

Scorers: João Mario (PEN) 51′, Neres 88′

It is advantage Benfica in their bid to return to the quarter-final stage as they overcame Scott Parker’s struggling Club Brugge on the road.

After a scoreless opening half, Benfica took the lead six minutes after half-time when Jack Hendry committed a clumsy foul on the edge of his own six-yard box, leading to a penalty being awarded.

From the spot, the in-form João Mario put his side in front by firing his kick in via the underside of the crossbar.

It is his fifth goal in this competition this season, with only Kylian Mbappé and Mo Salah scoring more.

With two minutes left, they added a big insurance second and it came thanks to more help from the home defence when Bjorn Meijer miscued his attempt at control completely, allowing David Neres to pounce and run through to put the first leg beyond doubt.

Tuesday’s results
