One of either Marcelo Brozovic or Nicolo Barella is likely to be the player to take over the captain’s armband at Inter following the departure of Samir Handanovic.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who report that the two midfielders and friends are the main candidates to captain the Nerazzurri whenever the current skipper leaves, particularly with Milan Skriniar close to a departure.

Handanovic will remain at Inter for at least one more season as he signs a contract extension even with his long-term successor Andre Onana all set to come in on a free transfer for next season.

However, the Slovenian will be 38 when next season begins and so is hardly likely to be around for too much longer, meaning that the issue of who inherits the captaincy on a permanent basis will become of increasing relevance.

Skriniar had been among the players tipped to potentially inherit the armband, but now the 27-year-old appears to be close to a big money sale to Paris Saint-Germain.

Accordingly, it falls to either Brozovic, who is one of the most experience players in the Nerazzurri’s squad and a vital player for them on the pitch, or Barella.

The Croat has been an Inter player longer than just about anyone currently in the team, and has established himself as an absolutely crucial player through many seasons of finding his role at the heart of the team.

Meanwhile, Barella is a player who already knows what it’s like to wear the armband, having captained Cagliari at the age of just 21.

Both midfielders are strong candidates to be the Nerazzurri’s captain once Handanovic is gone, and it looks to be down to the two of them for the role.
