Pompey have struggled this season in the Championship, and changes will be needed in the January to help.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Portsmouth supporters will have hoped for a much better return to the Championship, with the south coast-based club struggling at the bottom of the table after 13 matches.
John Mousinho's side have failed to adapt to the second tier after winning the League One title last season, and while their fellow promotion winners Derby County and Oxford United have found wins slightly easier to come by, Pompey have been cut adrift.
Nevertheless, there is still plenty of time left in the campaign to recover their position, and with the January transfer window upcoming, they will have the chance to make changes to the squad in an effort to make it stronger across the board.
However, as much as Mousinho knows he needs to be back in the window, he will have to hope that Michael Eisner, the owner of Portsmouth, backs him in the market and provides him with the funds to help make those changes.
The opening three months have not been kind in terms of results, and Pompey are not showing signs of getting closer to the level they need to be, and not all of their squad are up to the level required right now.
Although the team were extremely impressive on their way to the Championship, and despite a fantastic opening day draw with Leeds United, there has not been too many things to cheer about so far this year.
Yet, January offers the club an opportunity to make improvements. Football League World asked their Portsmouth Fan Pundit, Miltos Ioannidis, if he believes that Eisner will back Mousinho in the window.
He told FLW: "I think that Eisner will back us and the reason behind that is fairly simple. I think right now if someone from the outside, someone who is not a Pompey fan, wants to look at our squad, they would feel and almost fear we don't really possess enough quality or enough players that can do a job for us in the Championship on a consistent basis.
"Without a doubt, we do possess a few players that can do a job for us, it's just that, right now, I feel as though we lack that little bit of extra quality to really be able to get results, which is something that we are desperately after.
"At the moment we just lack one or two players that can work that little bit of magic out of nowhere and help us get over the line in situations where we haven't got over the line so far."
Miltos continued: "Players that can, of course, do that on a consistent basis, because I'm under no impression that we currently possess some players that can do a job for us in the Championship, it's just that they haven't really done that on a consistent basis so far.
"So, the owners know about the importance of the upcoming transfer window, the way things are looking at the moment, they know that it will be the most crucial transfer window of their reign so far.
"It will, to a very big extent, determine our Championship status, if we're going to get relegated, or if we're going to stay in the Championship."
This season has been a disappointment so far, and matches have been a struggle, and some of that is in part down to a lack of a goalscorer currently.
Colby Bishop had to undergo heart surgery in the summer after a scan in pre-season picked up a "potential risk", and he is still slowly recovering and coming back from what has been a terribly tough time for him and his family.
The Pompey striker scored 21 times to help his side to the League One title last season, and he has been missed hugely on the pitch, with Portsmouth scoring just 13 times in their opening 13 matches.
A striker will be seen as a priority depending on how close Bishop is to returning to the fray, and there should be no pressure put on him to come back. Mousinho will know how important getting that consistent goalscorer is, and without backing, he will not be able to do that.
