Derby County extended their unbeaten run in League One to ten games when they got the better of Cambridge United on Friday evening to a 1-0 scoreline.
The Rams have been extremely tight at the back in the last couple of months and are beginning to make clear positive strides under Paul Warne’s leadership.
Derby were heavy favourites to pick up the win against the struggling U’s, and they will be hoping to continue their upward trajectory when they host Accrington Stanley on Monday.
The Rams have produced a number of very exciting players from their youth ranks in recent seasons, and Eiran Cashin has noticeably benefitted from the step down to the third tier this season.
The 21-year-old has become one of the more assured centre backs in the division and is a reliable performer for Warne.
Cashin took to to reflect on the important three points.
Curtis Davies is making a gradual return to the first team picture at Pride Park, and Cashin deserves immense credit for stepping up in the 37-year-old’s absence.
The Irishman will certainly have admirers next month.
The Verdict
1 of 17
Colchester United Ipswich Town Cambridge United Sheffield Wednesday
At the moment, it feels like Derby are the most reliable side in the third tier outside of the runaway top three of Plymouth Argyle, Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday.
Barnsley have shown a great deal of promise under Michael Duff in the last few months, and may well go on to cement a position in the top six, but the Rams feel like a very safe bet to join them there at this rate.
There is 11 points between the Rams and the Tractor Boys in second place as things stand, suggesting that it would take a monumental effort from Warne and the squad to even enter the automatic promotion conversation.
There are key areas that need strengthening in January to ensure that injuries do not derail their promotion hopes.
