As Eintracht Frankfurt prepare for a critical showdown against Freiburg on the final Bundesliga matchday, Sport Bild reports that defender Robin Koch may depart the club if Eintracht fail to qualify for the Champions League. Frankfurt must at least draw against Freiburg to secure a UCL spot on Saturday.
Injury issues have left squad captain Kevin Trapp unavailable to don the armband at times this season. As a result, Koch has stepped into the breach to assume a leadership role with the RheinMainAdler. As comfortable as the Kaiserslautern native feels with the SGE, however, he may be tempted to move to another Champions League participant next year.
The 12-times-capped German international has already been linked with Borussia Dortmund. Sport Bild now claims that Bayer Leverkusen are targeting Koch – who has a reported €20m exit clause – as a potential replacement for Jonathan Tah. The German tabloid reports that Eintracht are currently in the midst of negotiating an extension for the 28-year-old.
SGE management is apparently offering a hefty pay raise (Koch earns a reported €3.5m annual salary at present), the promise of a future permanent captaincy, and an overall package that will keep him in Hessen until 2029.
