Eight arrests have been made, while at least 15 have sustained injuries, nine of whom have ended up in hospital after a night of violent clashes between Genoa and Sampdoria supporters following Wednesday evening’s derby in the Coppa Italia.
A long-awaited local derby between Genoa and Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia second-round led to violent, anti-social scenes on the streets surrounding the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Wednesday night.
The two teams had not met in almost two years before last night, and the tension between the rival supporters had been brewing for some time. According to updates from Calciomercato.com, the unsavoury scenes kicked off when Genoa supporters unveiled a series of banners stolen from Sampdoria ultras in recent months.
Riot Police were called upon after full-time, and the violence continued long into the night, up until around 2.30 a.m. local time.
One police officer has been hospitalised as a result of the clashes, while at least 14 others have sustained injuries. Nine people in total were admitted to hospital as a result of their injuries.
As of Thursday morning, eight arrests have been made.
Sampdoria progressed to the Coppa Italia round of 16 after a 1-1 draw in regular time, eventually defeating Genoa on penalties.
