Egyptian FA Sparks Controversy After Announcing Debt Deal with Zamalek
The Egyptian Football Association EFA caused wave of controversy on Monday after releasing public statement confirming financial settlement agreement with Zamalek SC aimed at resolving the club’s outstanding debts.
In its official release, the EFA stated:
"As part of our commitment to FIFA & CAF club licensing regulation especially those related to financial compliance & Fair Play .. we've reached agreement with Zamalek SC that marks major step toward meeting licensing standards"
The agreement reportedly includes:
This would allow Zamalek to fulfill CAF licensing requirements for the 2025 /26 season and re open the registration system to sign new players.
Despite the EFA’s positive tone, the statement sparked fury among Zamalek supporters who viewed it as public humiliation. Critics including Zamalek affiliated media figures blasted the reference to Financial Fair Play claiming it unfairly portrayed the club as violator of the law.
Insiders reveal the statement was triggered by Al Ahly’s demand during recent meeting with the EFA & League officials where the club called for financial transparency including the disclosure of all debts and budgets for participating teams.
The EFA felt compelled to clarify Zamalek’s registration status especially since three clubs had registration issues (Zamalek, Ismaily and Pharco) According to Reports.
"We didn’t mean to offend Zamalek. Our goal was transparency and equal treatment for all clubs" ... No official response has yet been issued by Zamalek SC.
