The Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 continued on Sunday with two exciting matches.
Here’s what happened.
Scorers: Mohamed (PEN) 45+1′; Elia 37′
Sent off: Hamdy (Egypt) 97′
Egypt were eliminated from the AFCON on penalties at the hands of DR Congo.
The two sides both drew all three of their group stage matches, and that theme continued when there was nothing to separate them after 120 minutes of Sunday’s round of 16 tie.
DR Congo dominated the early stages and got their reward in the 37th minute, when Yoane Wissa’s cross was headed in from close range by Meschak Elia.
But Egypt equalised from the penalty spot in first half stoppage time. Ahmed Hegazi was the player fouled, and Mostafa Mohamed made no mistake from 12-yards to send the sides in level at half-time.
Neither side was able to add to the scoreline in the second half, and the tie went to extra-time.
Mohamed Hamdy Sharaf had come off the bench for Egypt at half-time of normal time, but seven minutes into extra-time he was sent for an early bath after being shown a second yellow card.
The sides remained locked level after 120 minutes, and the tie went to penalties.
Both sides went deep into the shoot-out before DR Congo won it with their ninth kick, which was scored by goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi.
Scorers: Bayo 90+8′
Sent off: Bikoro (Equatorial Guinea) 56′
Equatorial Guinea were the top scorers in the group stage, but they are out of the tournament after Guinea snatched a dramatic late win against 10 men in Abidjan.
Equatorial Guinea were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Federico Bikoro was shown a straight red card for catching Mohamed Bayo in the rib-cage with an industrial challenge.
The 10 men then had a great chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty for a Sekou Sylla foul on Iván Salvador. Emilio Nsue took the resulting spot-kick, but agonisingly could only hit the post.
And their hearts were broken in the eighth minute of injury time, when Bayo popped up to net a dramatic winner to send Guinea through to the quarter-finals.
