Hossam Hassan has been named Egypt’s new head coach following their underwhelming Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

The 57-year-old succeeds Rui Vitoria, who was dismissed on Sunday after the country’s elimination at the tournament’s last-16 stage by DR Congo.

Hassan was part of three AFCON-winning sides for the Pharaohs as a player and has since carved out a coaching career with several clubs in his homeland.

The Egyptian Football Association confirmed on Tuesday that the former striker’s twin brother Ibrahim will also be involved in the new setup as team manager.

“The board of directors of the Egyptian Football Association decided, in its meeting held today, Tuesday, to appoint Hossam Hassan as technical director of the first Egyptian national team, succeeding Portuguese technical director Rui Vitoria,” confirmed an EFA statement.

“The council also decided to appoint Ibrahim Hassan as manager of the national team.”

Egypt’s next game sees them host Burkina Faso in June as the top two sides in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group go head-to-head.
